Here in California, we are probably close to something beautiful and want to enjoy the outdoors. Sometimes we don’t want the hard work of a mountain bike, so we get an ebike or an electronic bike! They can be super fun, but there are actually a lot of risks and if you think they are covered under your homeowners, auto, or renters insurance, you may be mistaken. It is different for each bike and each insurance carrier, it is best to check to make sure you’re insured. Electronic bikes are not cheap and they are highly sought after, so insurance is definitely a good idea for your ebike.
Ebikes Are Pricey…Ebike Insurance Is Not
Electronic bikes range anywhere from $1,000 all the way up to $12,000 or more. If you have an ebike or are thinking about getting one, then you know that this is an investment. When you invest your time and money into something like that, you are going to want to insure it. In reality, it’s like a step away from a motorcycle! If your electric bike gets stolen or damaged, paying a small amount of insurance instead of buying a whole new bike sounds more plausible to me.
What Type Of Coverage Would I Need On An Electric Bike?
Here at Unity One Insurance, we can offer you different coverage levels and different deductibles to have it fit your needs. One of the most important parts of an ebike insurance policy is liability coverage. Electronic bikes are usually faster and heavier than the regular mountain bike or beach cruiser, which makes this a higher risk bike. Liability would cover you if you caused harm to another person or if you damaged someone else’s property while riding. Without liability coverage, you could be sued and deal with lawsuits. Coverage on the policy includes damage caused by theft, fire, collision, vandalism, or hitting another object. Other things that are usually included are cycle apparel, spare parts, and rental reimbursement. There are other options like the liability that you could have and those include medical payments, vehicle contact protection, and roadside assistance.
I Thought My Homeowners, Auto or Renters Insurance Would Cover My Ebike?
Homeowner’s and renter’s policies do cover all these things for a normal bicycle, but an electric bike is considered a motorized vehicle. An auto policy covers these things for a car, but an ebike is not considered an auto because it does not need to be registered and you don’t need to be licensed in order to operate it. Certain insurance companies will cover this under your homeowners or renters insurance, but it varies from bike to bike and insurance carrier to insurance carrier.
