wildfire brush fire burns home

Is your home in an alleged fire or brush area? Or just located in California..? If so, what you need is wildfire insurance. As a broker and agent, we offer many options for your fire insurance with the goal in mind of the best coverage at the lowest possible price.

How to Insure Your Home With Wildfire Insurance:

Many local homeowners are finding that their current insurance company is no longer offering renewals or policies because their home is located in an alleged wildfire or brush area. New home buyers in those areas are finding that getting adequate home insurance coverage can be tough and cause delays in their escrows. The non-renewal and shopping process for home insurance can turn into a frustrating experience, but a good and knowledgeable local insurance broker or agent is key to helping you find what you’re looking for! We can help! Keep in mind, companies are using more underwriting information to better access potential risks. Your home location is listed in an “ISO Public Protection Class”. This rating measures the fire department’s ability to suppress a fire at your home. Ratings are listed from 1-10,1 being “superior” and a 10 being, “very high risk”. To find out more about how your home is being deemed a fire risk, read our blog post here. No matter how severe the fire area, there are options to get the proper insurance coverage to meet your needs! If the alleged fire exposure is your only problem, we have a market for it!

What an insurance company will consider:

  • Miles from the responding fire station (less than 5 is best, over 10 is very high risk)
  • Distance to fire hydrants or water storage tanks
  • Clearance from brush
  • Home construction type and roof type
  • Wildfire history in the area

Help! My Homeowners Policy Has Been Cancelled!

The massive amount of damage the California wildfires have caused led many insurance companies to reassess which houses and geographic areas they wish to insure. Properties that are ineligible for a preferred policy can still be placed with insurance companies. All these insurance companies offer very good protection at an affordable price, most homeowners just don’t know it.

The trend has been set for an insurance carrier to drop a homeowners policy if the property is located within 1/2 mile to a wildfire hazard/brush areas. Once a home is said to be a “high exposure risk”, the policy may be canceled or non-renewed. Once a fire insurance or homeowners insurance policy has been canceled, the mortgage company is notified. Now, the homeowner must find a new homeowners or fire insurance policy that will insure this “risk”. If the homeowner fails to do so, then the mortgage company will buy insurance on the home. This process is called “force-placed insurance”, which can be extremely expensive and not have the coverage that you need. Please call us and get the right coverage you need for the most affordable prices.

California Fair Plan

If your home is classified as being in a severe fire area and other companies are unwilling to write a policy for you, the California Fair Plan might be your only option.. The Fair Plan is intended to be the “insurer of last resort” for hard to place policies.

The California Fair Plan has major gaps in coverage that make it unsuitable for most needs without a “wrap around” policy. A “wrap around” policy helps to fill coverage gaps such as liability coverage, loss of use coverage, and extended perils such as theft or burglary. “Wrap-around” policies are offered by many major carriers and may qualify you for a multi-policy discount.
