Car insurance, commercial insurance, and health insurance have been the topics of discussion for 2020. This year has brought pandemics, deaths, and riots. It has been a challenging year for many people and we hope that things get better. Some questions that have popped up quite a bit, is my car insurance going to keep me covered if my car got damaged by the recent riots? Does my business insurance cover the vandalism of my property and the damages done by rioters?
As most protests have been peaceful, some have gotten very violent. Businesses have had things stolen and broken and cars have been smashed and destroyed.
What Is Covered
Most small business insurance policies cover damages by riots. Things that are usually covered are:
- damages done to their contents like furniture, supplies, computers, etc.
- damages to windows, lighting, and doors
- the cost of boarding up your business to secure it from the rioters
- if you lost income because you had to shut down because of the rioters
For car insurance, these things are usually covered:
- damage done to autos because of the riots are covered under comprehensive coverage
Each policy varies and every claim is different. Only a licensed claims adjuster can determine if you are covered for a loss or not.
Some Tips When Dealing With Riots & Claims
It is very important to file a claim immediately with your insurer so the process does not take longer than needed. It is also important to prevent any more damage to your property! It is okay to make a temporary fix, but it is best to wait until the adjuster has inspected the property. If you do need to make any temporary fixings to prevent further damage to your property, keep organized. Organize all receipts and transactions to prove what your total costs were. This also includes keeping a record of your property that is damaged. Take photos of things you will include in your claim. Again, call Unity One Insurance so we can walk you through this process and help you out every step of the way.
