Wildfire Prevention Tips

Fire season is all year round and it is better to be prepared in case a fire does happen. Better safe than sorry! So how can you be prepared? Read the tips below to get some ideas on how to keep you and your family as safe as possible.

  1. Make sure to review your homeowner’s policy, do you have enough coverage? Remember it is normal for a fire to burn 100,000 acres or more and it can destroy everything in its path. Having proper coverage on your dwelling and things like loss of use are very important. Also, the cost to rebuild a home can go up every year, did you add any upgrades to the house?
  2. Call your local fire department and find out information about the local fire hazards in your community. Some fire departments will do an inspection of your home!
  3. Check around for any areas that could have decaying wood. Dry rot is a good fire starter.
  4. Register for AlertOC at cityoforange.org, this will alert you via phone, text, or email of emergencies in your area,i.e a wildfire!
  5. Check to see what the exterior of your home is made of, is it wood sliding? If so, replacing it with fire-resistant materials that are factory treated with a fire retardant is a must. Some good anti-fire materials include stucco, brick, and fiber cement.
  6. Keep your area around your home clear within 100 feet. Cut back branches or plants that touch or hang over your roof. Weed out the dead, dry shrubs and vegetation.
  7. Make sure your roof is made with ignition resistant roofing material.
  8. Store flammable items away from your home such as propane tanks, firewood, etc.
